Abstract

884,434. Shaft couplings. BOSCH G.m.b.H., ROBERT. Nov. 17, 1959 [Nov. 29, 1958], No. 38920/59. Class 80 (2). A coupling between shafts 3, 4 which is susceptible to adjustment by hydraulic pressure to vary the angular relationship between the shafts, for use, in, e.g., the drive to an engine fuel injection pump, comprises disc-like flanges 6, 8 fast with the shaft 3 and carrying webs 7 supporting pivotally the flanges 11 of segments 9 having similar flanges 12 pivoted in a hub on the shaft 4, a compressed spring 17 engaging the segments to bias them away from each other and hence turn the shafts 3, 4 in one direction relatively to each other, while hydraulic pressure in a surrounding casing 1 opposes the spring bias and tends to move the segments inwards, thereby turning the shafts in the opposite direction relatively to each other. The flanges 11, 12 on the segments 9 are mounted in partcylindrical journals 13, 14 carried by the webs 7 and the hub of the shaft 4, respectively. Oil is drawn from a sump 25 by a pump 24 and supplied through a pipe 23 having a by-pass 26 with a restriction 27 therein to a port 22 leading to a space 21 in the casing 1 surrounding the coupling. Oil leaking from the space 21 past the segments 9 to the space containing the spring 17 and round the shaft 4 passes through ports &c. 30, 29, 28, 32, 34 to a pipe 35 vented to the sump 25. With increasing speed, the corresponding increase in pressure produced by the pump 24 forces the segments 9 inwards against the bias of the spring 17 and against the effect of centrifugal force.
