Abstract

736,975. Dynamometers. HEENAN & FROUDE, Ltd. Dec. 10, 1953 [Sept. 13, 1952], No. 23037/52. Class 106 (2). [Also in Groups XXIX and XXXIV] A hydraulic absorption dynamometer has a valve A, Fig. 1, in its fluid outlet B, the force necessary to move the valve A against the pressure of the.fluid in the dynamometer being obtained from a pressure generator K<SP>2</SP>. By controlling the pressure in the dynamometer the torque absorbed can be regulated. The rotor J of the pressure generator K<SP>2</SP> is mounted on a shaft driven at the same speed as or at a speed proportional to the speed of the rotary part of the dynamometer. Low-pressure fluid is fed to the generator K<SP>2</SP> through a pipe m<SP>1</SP> and the fluid pressure generated is conveyed by a. pipe m<SP>4</SP> through a needle valve N<SP>1</SP> to one face of a piston D coupled to the valve A. The fluid acting on this face of the piston D can be bled through a needie valve N<SP>2</SP> and pipes m<SP>5</SP> to the opposite face of the piston D, this opposite face of the piston D being also in communication with the low pressure fluid in the pipe m<SP>1</SP>. When the valve N<SP>1</SP> is fully opened and the valve N2 is fully closed the force on the piston D tending to close the valve A will be a maximum. By slowly closing N<SP>1</SP> and causing the restriction to the fluid flow through the valve N<SP>2</SP> to be correspondingly reduced, the force tending to close the valve A can be progressively reduced until it approaches zero. The valve N<SP>2</SP> and the pipe mB may be omitted if desired. Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate the construction of the needle valves N<SP>1</SP> and N<SP>2</SP>. The controlling fluid is caused to flow through sharp-edged ports P which are varied in effective area by moving a spindle N axially through screw means associated with a hand wheel n<SP>1</SP> or other means. Specifications 24949/10, [Class 106 (ii)], and 473,270 are referred to.
