1530424 Controlling clutches PROIZVODSTVEN OBIEDINE TURBOSTRO LENINGRAD METALLICHE ZAVOD 4 Jan 1977 00075/77 Heading F2L In a system for controlling coupling of a shaft 5 of a starter motor 6 to a moving shaft 10 of a gas turbine engine, fluid is supplied via valve 2 and restrictor 18 to passage 13 in shaft 5 and escapes via a nozzle 15 having diametrically-opposed orifices 16 confronting projections 17 of a gear 9 on shaft 10. When the shafts are rotating at about the same speed, the nozzle back pressure increases sufficiently to cause pressure gauge 19 to open valve 20 to admit fluid to cylinder 1 so that piston 7 is advanced to bring gear 8 into mesh with gear 9. In Fig. 3, the starter motor shaft is parallel to engine shaft 10, and the nozzle 29 is carried by idler gear 24 which is rotated by the driven gear 23. In each case, the volume of chamber is adjustable to determine the speed differential at which the shafts are coupled.
