Abstract
912,886. Measuring torque. BLACKBURN ENGINES Ltd. March 7, 1960, No. 8003/60. Class 106 (2). A device for measuring the torque on a shaft carrying an inclined tooth gear comprises a piston connected to the shaft and subjected to fluid pressure, the supply of fluid being increased progressively by displacement of the shaft due to end thrust. The piston has a constant leak and the pressure of fluid on the face of the piston gives a measure of the torque load on the gear shaft. As shown, a piston 3 is secured to the bearings 2 of a shaft 1 by a nut ring 4 and is enclosed in a fluid-tight casing 5 having end walls 6, 7. A fluid-tight seal is made between piston 3 and end wall 6 by bellows 8. Fluid at constant pressure is supplied through a union 9 to an annular passage 10 in the casing 5 and passes through ports 11 in a tubular member 12 and through ports 14 in a sleeve 13 slidable with piston 3. The ports 11 register with ports 14 to a greater or lesser degree according to the position of the piston 3. The fluid passes through an aperture 16 into the casing chamber in front of the piston 3. Some of the fluid escapes through a bore 18 and this together with fluid passed through bores 20, 21 and jet 22 to lubricate the bearings 2 is drained away. The pressure on the face of piston 3 is read by a meter (not shown) connected by a union 17.
