Abstract

174,726. Bush, H. D., and Merton, H. Oct. 30, 1920. Shaft couplings.-In means for indicating or producing, by fluid pressure, a variation in angular relationship between two aligned rotary members, the fluid-pressure device is in the form of a non-rotating annular piston and cylinder in endthrust engagement with the two rotary members, which directly engage one another by screwthreads. When used as a torque-dynamometer, the engine to be tested is coupled, for example by rods sliding in orifices 14, to the rotary member 4 engaging by 45‹ screw-threads 5 a shaft 1, to which is keyed the other member 2, similarly coupled bv sliding rods to a calibrated air-screw or other brake. The parts 2, 4 thrust respectively by antifriction bearings 9, 10 against an annular chamber and piston 7. The chamber 6 is filled through an orifice 12 with fluid, such as thin lubricating-oil, and is fitted with a pressure-gauge 11, which may be graduated to give torque readings directly. The apparatus may be put out of action by screwing up a nut 15. Means may be provided for varying the quantity of fluid in order to change the angular relationship of the parts 2, 4, in which case the piston may be doubleacting, so that motion is positive in both directions.
