Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-A revolving turbine, pump, or other shaft is packed by a viscous liquid, e.g. oil, maintained at a sufficient pressure by right and left hand screw-threads on the shaft. In the example shown in Fig. 1, oil contained in a chamber E is supplied by a disk F to a thread H, which feeds the oil towards the chamber A to be packed. The escape of oil towards the chamber A is opposed by a thread 1, which is longer and of shorter pitch than the thread H. Leakage of oil to the exterior is prevented by a screw-thread on the periphery of the disk F and a thread K on the shaft. Leakage when the shaft is at rest is prevented by a stuffing-box, or by a sleeve B supported by a diaphragm B' and bearing against a shoulder B<2> on the shaft. In a modification, the disk F is dispensed with, and the sleeve B embraces the threads I, H, K and bears on a shoulder on the shaft to the right of the thread K. The oil is introduced, if necessary under pressure, to a groove between the threads Hand K. In a further modification, the sleeve B embraces the thread I and a part of the thread H, and its end surfaces float between the drum in the chamber A and the casing 0. When the pressure of the oil rises sufficiently to overcome the pressure in the chamber A, the sleeve B is pressed to the left. The oil then escapes between the opposed faces of the sleeve B and the casing 0, and returns to the reservoir E, so that the sleeve B is maintained in equilibrium.
