Abstract

324,763. Bryant, C. W., and Brotherhood, Ltd., P. Dec. 11, 1928. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-In shaft packing wherein helical grooves on the shaft force liquid against the pressure fluid to be packed, the pressure of the packing-fluid is automatically regulated. The shaft b of a turbo-compressor is provided at each end respectively with a righthand and a left-hand shallow helical groove c which may run in a sleeve d so that oil supplied at a duct c<1> is raised in pressure and forced into the chamber. Collars c take the fluid thrust. A pump f draws oil through a pipe 2 from a reservoir h and delivers it through a pipe 3 to the duct c<1>. Surplus oil passes by a branch pipe 4, 5 controlled by a valve k under the action of a spring m and a piston subjected to the chamber pressure above and the pressure in the sleeve below. If the pressure at the duct c<1> falls the piston n is forced down to close the valve k and thereby increase the pressure.
