[Also in Division F1] Sealing means for the piston or piston rod of an hydraulic piston and cylinder device comprises an annular chamber in the cylinderengaging surface of the piston or of a bearing member through which the piston-rod passes, the chamber having opposite walls of equal internal and external diameters formed by adjacent surfaces of two constituent parts of the piston or bearing member one of which is axially slidable relative to the other to augment the pressure in the chamber. In Fig. 1 the chambers 3, 4 of the cylinder 2 of an hydropneumatic accumulator are filled with liquid and gas respectively. The piston 1 consists of slidable component parts 5, 6 held by a screw 17 and incorporating an annular chamber 13 filled with a pressure medium and a chamber 14 containing air or gas, packings 9-12 being provided as seals. The pressure medium may be a liquid or a grease introduced into the chamber 13 from the exterior through the cylinder wall, or it may be the liquid in the chamber 4 which is introduced past the packings 11 when the piston part 6 is supported against sliding in the cylinder. In operation, any pressure increase in the chambers 3, 4 leads to a greater pressure increase in the chamber 13 owing to the cross-sectional area of its radial surfaces exposed to fluid pressure being smaller than those of the piston parts 5, 6. In Fig. 2, the piston is made up of a unitary component including parts 22, 22a secured together and defining a chamber 20 between them, and of a component 21 in the form of a bush which co-operates with the parts 22, 22a to provide a second annular chamber 19 communicating with the chamber 20 through a bore 23. The annular chamber 13 may contain liquid or be completely filled with a rubber 0-ring which may be reinforced with P.T.F.E. In Fig. 4, the medium in the chamber 13 is placed under pressure by springs 31 clamped on the piston component 34 by a washer 35 retained against a sleeve 36 by a nut screwing on rod 32 integral with the piston component 33.
