Abstract
881,717. Pipe couplings. DAMIC CONTROLS Ltd. May 19, 1960 [May 19, 1959], No. 17013/59. Class 99(1). A self-sealing coupling comprises a coupling part 3 including a frusto-conical valve seating 7a and a frusto-conical valve 15 held normally on the seating by a spring 17, and a coupling part 1 containing a combined valve and probe consisting of concentrically arranged inner and outer members, the outer member 8 being shaped at the extremity thereof to form a valve seating 7 of frusto-conical shape and forming an inward continuation of the seating 7a and the inner member 6 constituting the probe and held normally in contact with the seating 7a by a spring 12. The member 6 has a blind axial boring 4 communicating with one or more slots 5 normally closed by the member 8 which, as a result of engagement of the probe with the valve 15, is moved axially to uncover the slots to permit fluid to flow therethrough, the probe simultaneously moving the valve 15 from the seating 7a to allow the flow of fluid through both parts of the coupling. As shown, a spring loaded sleeve 24 carried by the part 3 urges balls or plungers 22 radially into an annular groove 21 in the part 1 to couple the parts together ; alternatively, the parts 1, 3 are coupled together by screw-threads or a bayonet connection. A micro-switch may be operated during coupling and uncoupling of the coupling parts 1, 3.
