Abstract

916,256. Pipe couplings. DAMIC CONTROLS Ltd. Sept. 29, 1961 [Nov. 17, 1960], No. 39575/60. Addition to 881,717. Class 99(1). In a self-sealing coupling of the kind wherein coupling parts 1, 2 each contain a spring-loaded valve which is closed when the coupling parts are separated, the coupling part 2 having a combined closure valve and probe which forces the valve 9 in the coupling part 1 off the seating thereof when the parts are brought together, the part 2 includes an outer body member 22 into which the part 1 is adapted to enter and an inner body member 21 fixedly located in the member 22, and a separately constructed, tubular, combined closure valve and probe fixedly located within the member 21 and projecting therefrom, the walls of the projecting part of the combined closure valve and probe being formed with one or more apertures 35 for the flow of fluid; a second valve member in the form of a sleeve 36 encloses the combined valve and probe and is slidable within an enlarged boring in the member 21. The sleeve 36 is spring-urged into a position in which it closes the apertures 35 when the coupling parts are separated but is axially displaceable as a result of its head-on engagement with the other coupling part when the parts are brought together to uncover the apertures to permit flow of fluid and has a seating 43 engageable by a sealing ring 34 on the combined closure valve and probe when the coupling parts are separated. As shown, the sleeve 36 is formed with a head 38 with a conical face 39 which may have a groove containing a sealing ring which engages a corresponding face 20 of the part 1; the latter carries an " O " ring 16 which engages the external periphery of the sleeve. The valve in the part 1 comprises parts 9, 10 formed with conical faces 11, 12, the face 11 being stepped inwardly relative to the face 12. Retention of the parts 1, 2 in the coupled state is by balls 19 engageable in a groove in the part 1 and releasable by axial retracting movement of a spring-biased sleeve 27.
