880,357. Pipe couplings. M. L. AVIATION CO. Ltd. June 26, 1959 [April 28, 1958 ; Oct. 10, 1958], Nos. 13418/58 and 32443/58. Addition to 836,901. Class 99(1). In a coupling of the kind wherein a pipe and a part 8 are held together by a yoke 12 fitting over the end of the pipe or a member fitted thereto, and secured to the part 8 by two or more screws 13, and either the pipe or member is shaped to mate with a bellmouth 6 formed on the part 8, the curvature of the mating surfaces of the pipe or member, and the bellmouth, in the region of the area of sealing contact are unequal, one surface being conical and the other part-spherical. As shown, in Fig. 1, a pipe 1 has a belled end constituting a conical seating for the part-spherical surface 5 on an olive 3 the latter having a resilient extension 4 which grips the wall of the pipe 1, and a partspherical surface 9 that engages with a conical seating 6 forming the entrance to a passage 7 in the wall 8 of, e.g., a pressure vessel. In modifications (a) two pipes are secured end-to-end by the use of a double-ended olive and a pair of yokes connected by bolts, and (b) two pipes of different diameters are connected by means of an intermediate member having conical seatings for the reception of the part-spherical ends of the olives. According to the first Provisional Specification, a plate having a projection formed with a surface corresponding to that of an olive serves to blank off the passage when desired.
