Abstract

846,905. Pipecouplings. STRACHAN & HENSHAW Ltd. Nov. 15,' 1957 [Nov. 15, 1956], No. 35022/56. Class 99(1). A coupling for coupling together two pressurised vessels comprises end members 2, 32, for connection to the vessels, an interposed telescopic tubular member 20 having a universal joint 12, 26, at or adjacent each end, and mechanism 50 connected between said members 2, 32, for effecting telescopic movement of the member 20, while mechanism maintains the members 2, 32 parallel whilst permitting relative transverse movement. The upper telescopic tube 14 has a spherical end 12 forming a universal joint with a corresponding seating 8 in the member 2 and the lower telescopic tube 20 has a spherical recess forming a universal joint with the correspondingly shaped end 26 of the member 32, the lower end of which fits into a socket 30 of the vessel 31. The pressure of the fluid in the vessels ensures that the lower member 32 remains seated within the sockets. Fluid pressure operated servomotors 50 connected to the end members 2, 32, are provided to move the lower member out of the socket 30 to disconnect the coupling. The lower ends of the piston rods 52 are connected to a pair of annular plates 34, 36 between which is clamped a flange on the part 32, balls 38 permitting free lateral movement of the flange relative to the plates.
