Abstract

1,085,228. Pipe couplings. PLESSEY-U.K. Ltd. July 23, 1964 [July 31, 1963], No. 30409/63. Heading F2G. A pipe coupling comprises two complementary coupling members 1 and 4 wherein the mating surfaces 2 and 3 are cones whose taper is within the self-locking range (say, 15 degrees). The female cone 3 of the socket 4 is slightly greater than that 2 of the other element 1 the angles being 1 in 15 and 1 in 16 respectively relative to the axis. The cones are drawn together by a cap nut 6 the flange of which bears against a shoulder 7 on the spigot and which screws on to the socket member at 5. Tightening the nut causes the zone 10 at the end of the spigot temporarily to deform against the corresponding zone on the socket. The joint is disengaged by unscrewing the cap-nut 6 back against a ring 8 set in a groove 9.
