Abstract
882,115. Pipe couplings. CONEX-TERNA Ltd., and WHITWORTH, F. April 14, 1959 [April 17, 1958], No. 12245/58. Class 99(1). A sleeve 10 adapted to embrace the outside of a pipe 11 has at one end thereof a cylindrical portion to be received within a recess in a fitting 19 to which the pipe is to be connected, and, at the other end, an annular abutment face adapted to be engaged by a coupling nut 17 and one or more annular formations 13 adapted, when the nut is tightened to be deformed so as to bite into and form a seal with the wall of the pipe. As shown, the sleeve 10 of copper is provided with an inward, annular flange 12 for engagement with the end of the pipe 11 of polyethylene or other plastic. When the coupling nut 17 is screwed on to the fitting, the shoulder 14 and end face 16 of the sleeve are engaged by the shoulder 18 of the nut and chamfered end .20 of the fitting respectively whereby the shoulder 14 is forced inwardly and the corresponding internal shoulder 21 of the sleeve bites into and forms a seal with the wall of the pipe ; when no further relative movement between the sleeve and fitting can occur the end face 16 of the sleeve is deformed and forced into the wall of the pipe. Collapse of the wall of the pipe is prevented by a flanged liner 22 of metal. In a modification, the sleeve 10 has a single annular formation bounding a ring of nylon, polyethylene or a non-ferrous metal.
