Abstract

895,461. Pipe couplings. COMPRESSION JOINTS Ltd. Feb. 15, 1960 [Nov. 21, 1958], No. 37458/58. Class 99(1). A pipe end fitting comprises male and female elements 6, 7 of a synthetic plastic capable of screw-threaded inter-engagement to define a cavity therebetween a sleeve 10 of synthetic plastic having a frusto-conical nose which, when the sleeve is mounted about the pipe 13 and located within the cavity with the said nose convergent towards the pipe end, coacts in wedge-like manner with a compression face 8 forming part of the wall of the cavity to seal the pipe with respect to the fitting, and a locking washer 11 which when mounted about the pipe and located within the cavity on the opposite side of the sleeve to the pipe end is caused to bite into the periphery of the pipe to resist axial movement of the pipe with respect to the fitting as the seal is made by compression of the sleeve and washer between opposite walls 8, 9 of the cavity during tightening of the elements 6, 7. As shown, the sleeve of nylon, has a wedge-like nose portion 15 and a recess 17 of frusto-conical from which receives the washer 11. The latter is a metal annulus having resilient radial, forwardly projecting teeth 18. In modifications, the sleeve has an end face 17, of outwardly convergent frusto-conical form, the washer being of complementary shape, or a radial end face, the teeth of the washer being bowed and flattened during assembly of the coupling. The washer may be captive on the sleeve.
