Abstract
A process for the purification of ketene which has been obtained by the thermal splitting of acetic acid under reduced pressure in the presence of a catalyst and from which the greater part of the water and acetic acid has been removed by cooling comprises bringing the impure ketene into contact with liquid hexachlorobutadiene or a liquid aliphatic ether boiling above 130 DEG C. whereby the impurities are removed in the liquid and the gaseous ketene passes on. Temperatures of about 20-85 DEG C. are preferred. Specified ethers are di-n-hexyl, di-(1-ethylbutyl) and di-(1-ethylhexyl) ethers. The extracted impurities may be removed from the liquid solvent by cooling and the solvent recycled. The contacting process may be effected in the vacuum pump, e.g. a liquid ring pump, used to produce the reduced pressure for the thermal splitting.
