Abstract

Alcohols, obtained by the oxonation of olefines to give aldehydes which are then reduced or alternatively aldolised with dehydration and hydrogenation of the product, are purified by treatment in the liquid phase with a dry silicaalumina gel in which the proportion of silica is from 40% to 98% by weight. The process is particularly applicable to alcohols derived from olefines having from 2 to 12 carbon atoms in the molecule. The preferred temperatures for carrying out the process are in the range 40 DEG C.-200 DEG C. The process may be carried out directly on the crude alcohol or upon a product which has undergone some preliminary purification, e.g. distillation or treatment with a solution of caustic soda or sodium bicarbonate. Examples are given of the treatment of crude isodecyl alcohol, butyl alcohol and 2-ethyl hexanol.
