Abstract
Pure monomeric formaldehyde is produced by washing gaseous formaldehyde with semiformed solutions at a temperature of from - 10 DEG C. to + 80 DEG C., the semi-formal solution used as washing liquid moving in a closed circuit, the adsorbed impurities being separated from the washing liquid by known methods, the alcoholic component of the semi-formals consisting of alcohols with a boiling-point above 100 DEG C., decomposing the bulk of the semi-formal solution first used as a washing solution by heat and conveying the resulting formaldehyde gas to the semi-formal washing liquid where it is washed to yield pure monomeric formaldehyde, mixing the solution poor in formaldehyde remaining after the decomposition with polluted aqueous formaldehyde solutions and/or formaldehyde alcohol solutions in which the alcohol component has a boiling-point of over 100 DEG C., separating the water from the mixture and adding the resulting semi-formal solution to that part of the washing liquid which has not been thermally decomposed and which is caused to move in a closed circuit. In a modification, the part of the washing liquid which has been thermally decomposed and mixed with aqueous formaldehyde solutions and/or formaldehyde alcohol solutions in which the alcohol has a boiling-point above 100 DEG C. is added to the non-decomposed part of the semi-formal solution, the absorbed impurities and the water being mainly removed from the resulting mixture by distillation at reduced pressure. The alcoholic component of the semi-formal solutions preferably consists of multivalent alcohols having fewer than 5 carbon atoms. Examples are given.
