Abstract
The alkylation of aliphatic compounds containing a tertiary carbon atom and aromatic compounds containing a replaceable nuclear-bound hydrogen atom is effected with an olefine, alkyl halide, alcohol or ester as alkylating agent in the presence as catalyst of an aqueous solution of a metal halide acid. The product is recovered from the organic phase by fractionation. The process can be used to introduce ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, amyl, benzyl or cyclohexyl groups into aliphatic tertiary hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and their halogen compounds, phenols and phenolic ethers. Suitable catalysts are solutions of the acids HFeCl4,2H2O; HFeCl4.4H2O; HFeCl4,6H2O; HZnCl3,2H2O; HZnCl5,2H2O; HSnCl3,3H2O; H2SnCl6,6H2O; HSbCl6,2H2O; HSb2Cl7,2H2O and HBi2Cl7,3H2O and they may be prepared by dissolving the metal halide and hydrogen halide in water, not necessarily in stoichiometric quantities. The bromine acids can also be used.
