Abstract
Aldehydes, obtained by reacting an olefine with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst at elevated temperatures and pressures, are purified by freeing the aldehyde product from catalyst and recovering the aldehydes contaminated with alcohols not easily separated by distillation, fractionating the aldehydes in a fractionator under reduced pressure, whereby acetal formation is minimized, to remove higher or lower boiling contaminants, and subjecting the alcohol-contaminated aldehyde fraction, for a period of time sufficient to effect acetalization of the alcohols, either to fractionation in the presence of an acid catalyst or to heat treatment at a temperature of 150 DEG to 450 DEG F. and subsequent fractionation to recover aldehydes. The acid used as catalyst may be formed in situ by oxidizing a small amount of the aldehyde by blowing in air. A diluent may be present during the acetalization.
