Abstract
A process for the production of maleic anhydride by the dehydration of maleic acid comprises contacting maleic acid with anisole at a temperature of at least about the boiling point of anisole at the pressure used and not less than 120 DEG C., separating the water and anisole vapours therefrom and recovering the maleic anhydride. The process may be applied to maleic acid in solid or liquid form, in anisole solution or, usually, in aqueous solution. Batchwise or continuous operation may be used and atmospheric, reduced or superatmospheric pressures are operable.
