Abstract
Ethylene oxide is recovered from its dilute aqueous solutions by subjecting the solution to the action of steam in counter-current flow in a packed tower under sub-atmospheric pressure of preferably between about 20 and about 70 mm. mercury such that a substantial, but incomplete condensation of steam takes place, so that there is a difference in temperature of not less than 3 DEG C., and preferably between 3 DEG and 15 DEG C. between the solvent leaving the base of the column and the ethylene oxide solution entering the top of the column. The ethylene oxide issuing from the top of the tower may be absorbed in water in an additional absorption tower to form a more concentrated solution than the starting material. In an example, gaseous ethylene oxide is passed through an absorption tower and the resulting aqueous solution flows to a stripping column down which it trickles against an ascending current of steam, the rate of flow of which is so controlled that, provided that the pressure exerted by the vacuum pump drawing the ethylene oxide and the water vapour from the top of the column is correspondingly regulated, there is maintained a temperature difference of not less than 3 DEG C. between the solution entering the top of the tower and the stripped water leaving the base. Numerical data is included to show the efficiency of the process. Specification 533,054 is referred to.
