Abstract
Substantially sulphuric acid free hydrogen fluoride is prepared from fluorspar and sulphuric acid by passing the vapours through a packed separating column to two separate condensers or groups of condensers and returning the condensed impure hydrofluoric acid from the first set of condensers to the packed column to irrigate it. The impure vapours may be washed with concentrated H2SO4 before coming into the packed column at 140-150 DEG C. In the first condensers condensation is effected with water at about 10 DEG C. and the impure condensate is recycled to the packed column at 20-40 DEG C. The second set of condensers may be cooled with brine at - 10 DEG C. In an example, HF condensate from the first group of condensers contained about 0.3% H2SO4 and that from the second set contained about 0.007% of H2SO4.
