Abstract
Hydrochloric acid and aluminium oxide are recovered from aluminium pickling bath liquors by a three-stage process involving first a distillation to remove hydrochloric acid which may be accompanied by a concentration of the remaining aluminium chloride solution. The aluminium chloride solution is then admixed with aluminium oxide to form a solid mass which is roasted in the third stage to yield hydrogen chloride and water vapour, which are condensed to give hydrochloric acid. The dilute hydrochloric acid obtained from the distillation stage may be used for washing out the hydrochloric acid from the vaporous products of the roasting stage. The aluminium chloride solution may be crystallized prior to admixture with the aluminium oxide. The crystallization may be effected by the addition of hydrogen chloride from the roasting stage to the aluminium chloride solution.
