Abstract

Polycaprolactam is prepared by heating at 200 DEG -300 DEG C. the evaporation residue from an aqueous caprolactam solution which has been purified by passing the impure aqueous solution containing lactam oligomers which form a solid phase at room temperature, through one or more cation and/or anion exchangers at a temperature of at least 30 DEG C. Specifications 762,879, 763,953, 793,598 and 838,591 are referred to.ALSO:Impurities or impurities and oligomers are removed from an impure aqueous caprolactam solution containing lactam oligomers which at room temperature form a solid phase, by passing the aqueous solution at a temperature of at least 30 DEG C. through one or more cation and/or anion exchangers. Linear oligomers may be removed from an ion exchanger by passing H2SO4 or HNO3 of concentrations greater than 2N over the exchanger. The starting solution may be lactam wash water, and the temperature should be such that all or almost all of the oligomers are dissolved. Specifications 762,879, 763,953, 793,598 and 838,591 are referred to.
