Abstract

879,353. Crimping and treating fibres. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A. G. March 1, 1960 [March 3, 1959], No. 7256/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 120(3) Continuous filaments or staple fibres of regenerated cellulose or synthetic linear polymer e.g. polyamides, polyacrylonitrile, polyalkylenes such as polyethylene or polypropylene, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyvinyl chloride, are crimped or curled and the surfaces thereof may be roughened, by conducting the filaments etc. with water through a vertically disposed tube which is enlarged at the upper end and conically tapered at the lower end, allowing the filaments and water to impinge on a firm support and drying, as by hot air or infra-red rays, the filaments without applying tension thereto. The support may be a perforated conveyer belt which continuously removes the filaments compressed into folds thereon and enables the water to be collected and recirculated to and discharged into the enlarged end of the tube. The water may contain additives such as sulphuric acid or alkali metal sulphites for removing copper or desulphurisation in the case of cellulose filaments, or wetting, swelling or shrinking agents, and its temperature may be raised up to 100‹C. The filaments may be retarded to move at a lower speed than the water and, if the filaments are still soft, they may be stretched as a result of such speed differential. The crimping may be rendered permanent by a further treatment with steam.
