Abstract
879,156. Pipe couplings. HUGHES TOOL CO. Aug. 20, 1959 [Sept. 5, 1958], No. 28530/59. Class 99(1). A wear resistant tool joint member 1 for connecting drill pipe sections is provided with a square end shoulder 4 and a plurality of bands of wear resistant material which is bonded to the member, a plurality of recesses 11 in the shoulder 4 extending axially of the member to the outermost of the bands and being filled with wear resistant material integrally connected with the wear resistant material in the outermost band. As shown, the member 1 is screw-threaded at one end 2 for attachment to the pin end of a mating joint member and is secured at the other end 3 of reduced cross-section to a section of drill pipe. The surface of the member 1 is provided with circumferential grooves 5, 6, 7, 8 with intervening lands 9 one or more axial groves 10 being provided to interconnect the circumferential grooves. The grooves are filled with wear resistant material which is bonded to the wear resistant material provided in the recesses 11. The recesses 11 may be in alignment with or angularly displaced from the grooves 10.
