681,566. Rope end connecting attachments. N.F.B. DISPLACEMENT PUMP CO., Ltd. May 15, 1950 [March 10, 1950], No. 6126/50. Class 109 A socket or connector for detachably connecting a tool &c. 10 to a wire rope 1 comprises a tubular member divided lengthways into at least two sections 3, 4 adapted to be assembled to form a cage enclosing a ferrule &c. 2 secured to the rope end and a part 9 of the tool, each section of the cage having a portion of reduced diameter at each end to form an annular seat, together with a separate annular clamping device fitted round the annular seat at each end of the cage to secure the cage sections in assembled position, the clamping devices having an outer diameter not exceeding the outer diameter of the assembled cage. The overall diameter is thus kept to a minimum, adapting the connector for use in the tubes of oil wells &c. In one form of clamping device for the inner ends of the sections 3, 4, the latter are formed with semi-cylindrical grooves to form a seat for an annular ring 12. The ends have a tapered bore 13a to allow the sections to be splayed apart and the ring 12 slipped into position. In one form of clamping device for the outer ends 14a of the sections 3, 4, the device comprises ring 15 having an internally threaded portion screwing on to a threaded portion 16 of the tool. The ring 15 also has a conical recess 17 to engage the tapered portions 14a of the sections 3,4. A locking ring 18 may also be provided. In another form of clamping device for the inner ends 21, Fig. 3, of the sections 3, 4, a pair of clamping rings 19, 20 are provided having engaging screw threads at their adjacent ends. A split ring 27 is fitted into a groove 28. Tapered recesses 25, 26 on the rings engage over conical parts, 22, 29 on the cage section and split ring 27 respectively. The ferrule 2 may be of the kind described in Specification 681,550.
