878,879. Optical objectives. WRAY (DEVELOPMENTS) Ltd. April 14, 1960 [Jan. 19, 1959], No. 1916/59. Class 97(1) A wide angle objective consists of a central portion made up of two divergent menisci arranged concave to one another on opposite sides of an aperture stop and disposed between two convergent lenses, this central portion being arranged between two divergent menisci each concave towards the aperture stop. The convergent lenses of the central portion may be menisci, concave towards the aperture stop and each of the four components of the central portion may consist of a single element or of a cemented combination. Preferably, the front and rear divergent menisci are simple elements having refractive indices higher than 1À65. The convex front surface of the front divergent meniscus preferably has a radius of curvature greater than 1À5F where F is the equivalent focal length of the wide angle objective, and the inner concave surface of this meniscus is preferably of a radius greater then 0À7F. Optical data are given in the Specification for one example of the embodiment illustrated and for one example of an embodiment in which the lenses 3 and 7 are simple elements.
