536,448. Lenses. TAYLOR, TAYLOR & HOBSON, Ltd., and WARMISHAM, A. Nov. 9, 1939, No. 29708. Drawings to Specification. [Class 97 (i)] A photographic or like objective comprises five air spaced simple elements, the first and fourth being divergent, the others being convergent, the first being meniscus and convex to the front, and the radius of curvature of the front surface of the fourth element being greater than that of its rear surface. The space between the first and second elements is preferably not less than the equivalent focal length of the whole objective nor greater than 3.5 times it. The first element may be of glass having an AbbÚ number greater than 55, and may have a focal length greater than 1.5 times the equivalent focal length and less than 6 times it. The fourth element may have a mean refractive index greater than 1.65, an AbbÚ number substantially less than 33.5 and a front surface having a radius of curvature greater than 3.5 times the equivalent focal length, and greater than 10 times that of the rear surface of the element ; its separation from the third element may be greater than 10 per cent. of the equivalent focal length.
