Abstract

878,643. Mixing liquids. LAMBTON, C. W. March 26, 1959 [March 31, 1958; Sept. 29, 1958], Nos. 10316/58 and 31101/58. Class 86 Apparatus for adding a liquid, e.g. perfume, soap, detergent, deodorant or antiseptic, to a flowing liquid. e.g. water, utilizes a Venturi suction effect to draw the liquid to be added from a space which is charged by puncturing a capsule containing the liquid. In Fig. 5, a number of capsules 13 are supported by a rotable magazine ring 28 which is indexed into a position, determined by a spring-detent 21, in which the selected capsule is aligned with a piercer 37 having a slot 40 which, when the capsule is completely impaled, allows air to enter the top and liquid to leave the bottom of the capsule. The discharged liquid collects in the space 41 from which it is drawn through the passages 53, 51 into the Venturi tube 43. The mixed liquids may be discharged through a spray head. As shown, the Venturi tube 43 is mounted ball- and-socket wise to permit limited rocking, but, in .another embodiment, this is dispensed with and the discharge is through a fixed co-axial spray head. In Fig. 5, a groove 50 permits the passage 53 always to be in communication with the passage 51 during the rocking. The spray head consists of a casing 56 which receives liquid from the mixer and delivers it through a passage 109 to a space 110 in communication with an inner spray nozzle 107 and, when the lever 117 is operated to move the flange 104, with the outer nozzle 57. The lever 117 is on a shaft carrying an eccentric disc cam 113 and a crank pin 114, the cam 113 engaging a slot in a sliding sleeve 105 carrying the flange 104 and the pin 114 engaging a groove 116 in a plunger 108 carrying the inner spray member 107. The sprays are produced in grooves 106, 107 surrounded by packing rings 57a, 107a, and to prevent back pressure, when a fine spray is produced, the plunger 108 is connected with a tapered member 58 which moves to restrict the Venturi when the quantity of liquid being sprayed is reduced. The spray head 56 may be replaced by a simple spray rose, or the double spray means may be replaced by a single spray nozzle which is axially adjusted by screw means, so that the Venturi-constricting means and the spray nozzle are adjusted together. The capsules may be of gelatine, plastic or alginate material, and if they are liable to damage by heat from a hot liquid flow, an insulating bush may separate the magazine ring from the conduit 26.
