Class 86 [Also in Group I] In a device for introducing a quantity of perfume, soap or other chemical substance into a water supply, a closed container 9 for the substance is disposed in a sleeve 7 having slidably mounted therein a rod 14 which, when moved to apply pressure to the container 9, will rupture it. The sleeve 7 is slidably mounted in a cylindrical wall 5 provided in a housing 1 through which the water flows, and radial drillings 16 in the wall 5 are arranged to pass part of the water through the cylindrical wall and into and out of the sleeve 7. The degree of mixing can be controlled by varying the angular position of the drillings 16 relative to the direction of water flow, the wall member 5 being rotatable for this purpose. In a modification, Fig. 4, the container, disposed in a sleeve 23, is pierced by a rod 31 provided with passages 40, 41 through which the substance is discharged into the water stream. Due to the nature of the container material, a sealed joint is automatically provided between the container and the rod 31, and the mixing may be interrupted if the rod is displaced to a position in which the passage 41 is within the container. Alternatively the piercing means may produce one or more punctures in the container and then be withdrawn to allow discharge of the substance.
