878,458. Testing efficiency of hollow vessels. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Nov. 17, 1958 [Nov. 15, 1957], No. 35614/57. Class 106 (2). [Also in Groups XXII and XXVIII] Annular welds 3, 4 between the inner and outer faces of a plate 1 and a tubular member 2 passing through an aperture 7 in the plate 1 are tested by applying fluid under pressure to the annular space 8 defined by the welds 3, 4 the outer surface of the tubular member 2 and the surface of the aperture 7. The tubular member 2 is sealed by covers 9, 10 and compressed air is admitted through a passage 13 in the plate 9 and a hole 5 in the tubular member 2. The welds are coated with a soapy liquid so that defects are indicated by bubbles. Alternatively, carbon dioxide under pressure is used and leakage is detected by an infra-red gas analyser. After testing the hole 5 is filled by welding or is plugged. In a modification, the hole 5 is formed in the plate 1. Specification 865,427 is referred to.
