Abstract
1534874 Leak detection IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 Jan 1976 [17 Jan 1975] 2119/75 Addition to 1431048 Heading G1S To detect a leak, e.g. from a pipe joint as shown, the site of the possible leak is enclosed by a barrier, e.g. constituted by a strip of rubber 4 whose ends are joined by a rubber stud 6 having an axial port 9, and the packing 11 in a transparent tube 10 connecting the port 9 with atmosphere is observed, the packing being a substance which changes colour on contact with leaking material. The rate of change of colour provides a measure of the leakage rate, and the tube 10 may be graduated to this end. The enclosure may be flushed before testing, e.g. with air if testing for a cyclohexane leak, and a pump may be used to draw material leaking into the enclosure through the tube 10. Alternatively gas may be passed into the enclosure to drive leaking material through the tube 10.
