837,411. Welding by pressure. LEWIS, E. M. Sept. 3, 1956 [June 3, 1955], No. 15997/55. Class 83 (4). In welding a stud or like member to a plate or other base, its bottom portion is welded to the base, and a groove is subsequently machined around the weld to eradicate any annular grooves produced during welding. In an embodiment the stud 10 has an enlarged flange 11 at its lower end and during welding two grooves 12, 13 are produced. A wide shallow groove 16 is machined in the plate 14 by an annular rotating tool which also-removes the flange 11. The bottom of the groove can be rolled by a grooved or knurled roller to improve fatigue endurance.
