876,354. Sewing. SHEA, A. Aug. 27, 1958 [Jan. 7, 1958], No. 653/58. Class 112 A sewing device comprises a handle, a needle shaped in the form of at least one complete turn of a helix and which is secured at one end to the handle. is provided at its other and pointed end with an eye, and is adapted to hold a correspondingly coiled length of stitching wire or thread, and means adapted to hold the wire or thread at the handle end of the needle. A needle 1 is secured to a handle 2 by means of a straight length 3, is thereafter formed into a curved portion 4 which subtends slightly more than 360 degrees, is formed on its convex periphery with a thread-holding groove 6, and is formed adjacent its pointed end 5 with an eye 7. An arm 8 clamped to the handle, carries a lever 9, and a pawl 10 mounted on the lever is engagable with a notch or notches 11 formed on the arm. Thread, after being passed through the eye 7 and being coiled in the groove 6, is anchored in a notch 12 formed in lever 9. The device is used for closing the end of a tubular container enclosing a cylindrical article, the needle being passed in one operation in a circular path about the gathered end of the container, whereby formation of a tuft on the end of the article is avoided.
