Means to facilitate the threading of the needle 3 in a sewing machine comprise a rod-like member 5 slidably mounted in the needle bar 1 and having a flexible extension 6 provided with a finger grip 12 and also with a hook 7 adapted to be passed through the eye 8 of the needle when rod 5 is drawn downwardly against the bias of a spring 10. In a modification hook 7 and finger grip 12 are carried by a bowed, springy member which is slidably mounted in a longitudinal groove provided in the needle bar and is held therein by a ring fitted at the lower end of the latter, said member being thereby retained frictionally in any adjusted position.
