A lubricating grease comprises (a) a lubricating oil, (b) an inorganic gelling agent, and (c) a minor proportion by weight of the total composition of a finely divided alkaline earth metal salt, preferably the calcium salt, of a carboxylic acid containing 1-10, preferably 1-4, carbon atoms, such salt generally being present in an amount of 3-25%, most suitably 5-15%, by weight, and preferably having a particle size not greater than 125 m , but most preferably below 5 m . (a) may be any lubricating oil commonly used in greases, e.g. refined, unrefined, or semi-refined paraffinic, naphthenic or asphaltic base mineral or synthetic oil, having a viscosity of 50-4000 S.U.S. at 100 DEG F. (b) may be a clay such as bentonite or hectorite, or amorphous colloids, such as silica, magnesia, alumina, silica-lime or silica-magnesia, in aerogel form, and is usually present in amounts of 1-15% by weight. To improve the compatibility of the gelling agent a small amount of surface active agent is generally incorporated in amounts of 30-100% by weight of the gelling agent; it is preferred that the surface active agent be cationic and that the gelling agent be treated therewith to render it oleophilic before incorporation in the composition. The salt (c) may be the salt of a saturated or unsaturated, aliphatic mono-or poly-carboxylic acid, of hydroxy derivatives thereof, or of aromatic carboxylic acids; calcium acetate and calcium tartrate are preferred. Such salts endow the compositions with extreme pressure characteristics. The composition may be formulated by milling the salt into the preformed grease directly; by mixing into the grease a mixture of salt and lubricating oil; by emulsifying an aqueous solution of the salt with oil by means of an emulsifying agent, dehydrating the mixture and adding the suspension of salt in oil to the preformed grease; or by forming the salt in situ in a lubricating oil, e.g. by slurrying lime with oil and then adding glacial acetic acid to the mixture. The compositions may also include dispersants such as propylene carbonate, antioxidants such as phenyl-a -naphthylamine, and corrosion inhibitors such as sodium nitrite or potassium chromate.
