[Also in Group XXXVII] The tension in a web is maintained constant by applying a braking torque to a drum, from which the web is unwound by an electrically driven capstan, by an alternating-current motor coupled to a shaft of the drum. The rotor of the A.C. motor is rotated by the drum in a direction opposite to that of the rotating field due to windings on the stator and control windings of saturable reactors in series between an A.C. supply and the stator windings are energized by the output of an amplifier, responsive to a signal from a strain gauge loaded by a jockey pulley over which the web passes, so as to maintain the tension in the web constant. For an induction motor having a wound rotor, the torque may be initially adjusted for the desired speed range by variable resistances in the rotor circuit. Specification 875,473 is referred to.
