874,959. Variable speed and reversing gearing. SUBERKRUB, F. Nov. 26, 1957, No. 36885/57. Class 80 (2). A reversing gear between driving and driven shafts 1, 3 comprises driving and driven gears 2, 4 adapted to be connected for forward driving by clutching a gear 6 in mesh with gear 2 to an auxiliary shaft 5 to which is secured a gear 7 meshing with gear 4. For reverse drive gear 6 is declutched and a gear 9 in mesh therewith is clutched to another auxiliary shaft 8 having a gear 10 also in mesh with driven gear 4. Additional forward or reverse ratios may be provided by additional auxiliary shafts such as 11 with one fixed and one clutchable gear thereon meshing with the driven gear 4 and the driving gear 2 or either gears 6 or 9. A brake shaft 17 with a gear 18 meshing with the driven gear 4 may be provided and controlled by a brake 19, 20, 21 to slow down the driven member such as a ship's propeller before reversal of the drive. The brake and the clutches are preferably of the multiple disc-type and hydraulically actuated.
