In a self-priming centrifugal pump in which the impeller discharges by way of a passage 20 to a discharge chamber 13, priming is effected by recirculation of fluid from the discharge chamber 13 to the impeller chamber 14 through a tube 25. A spring 31 presses the tube 25 inwardly so that a shoulder (not shown) on the tube abuts against a shoulder on the pump casing. This construction permits the use of impellers of different diameters, the tube 25 selected for use with a particular size of impeller being of such size that its leading and trailing edges 27, 28 lie close to the periphery of the impeller. In an alternative construction, the spring 31 is omitted and the tube 25 is located longitudinally by means of a rod having a screw-threaded engagement with the pump casing. This permits adjustment of the clearance between the tube 25 and the impeller to compensate for wear. Specification 836,945 is referred to.
