Abstract

Keratinous fibres are treated with an esterifying agent for carboxylic acid groups under esterifying conditions. The esterifying agent is preferably a low molecular weight alcohol, e.g. methanol, ethanol, n-propanol or isopropanol, which is contacted with the fibres, which may be wool or hair, in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. hydrochloric acid, at an elevated temperature, e.g. above 50 DEG C. The fibres may subsequently be subjected to a setting process in which the fibres, or fabrics made therefrom, are formed into the desired shape, treated with a mercapto compound, e.g. thioglycerol or ammonium thioglycollate, to break the disulphide linkages and then treated with an oxidising agent, e.g. sodium perborate. Alternatively setting may be accompanied by steaming, preferably in the presence of ammonium carbonate.
