Abstract

In the manufacture of hat bodies from fur fibres, the fibres in the uncarrotted state are removed from the skins (e.g. hare and rabbit skins) and formed into cones in known manner, and the cones are impregnated with an aqueous solution of a carrotting agent. A specified carrotting solution comprises 30 to 50 grams/litre of acid (nitric, hydrochloric) and about 10 to 30 grams/litre of hydrogen peroxide. Solutions containing 10 to 25 grams/litre of urea nitrate, with or without hydrogen peroxide, may also be used. The cone-liquor ratio may be from about 1 : 30 to about 1 : 50, so that the cones may move freely in the solution. The cones may be slightly prefelted prior to carrotting. The duration of the carrotting is dependent on the temperature of the solution, e.g. 1-2 hours at 80 DEG C. or overnight at 40-50 DEG C. If desired, the cones may be impregnated at room temperature, excess carrotting agent removed and the impregnated cones allowed to lie about for 40 hours. In a further modification the cones, after lying about for 1-2 hours, are heated to about 80 DEG C. for 30-60 minutes. In an example, cones are formed in the usual way from uncarrotted rabbit or hare fur and are moistened with hot water. The cones are then placed in an aqueous solution at 45 DEG C. containing 35 grams of nitric acid and 15 grams of hydrogen peroxide per litre and left overnight. After treatment is complete the cones may be worked up into hat bodies in the usual manner.
