Abstract

872,591. Casting processes. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Oct. 18, 1957 [July 18, 1956], No. 22174/56. Class 83 (1). Continuous castings are improved by imparting movement to the liquid core by the combined effect of an electric current and a magnetic force. Direct current is passed longitudinally of the billet through spring-loaded rollers 3, 5 which may be the billet withdrawal rolls. A magnetic field is provided by a magnet 7 which may be a permanent magnet, 'electromagnet or polyphase electromagnet. In a modification the current flows transversely of the billet. The magnet or magnets may rotate around the billet in a vertical plane or a plane normal to the axis of the billet, or there may be a combination of these movements to produce a helical movement around the billet.
