Abstract
909,848. Locating magnetic bodies. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 5, 1961 [May 24, 1960], No. 18268/60. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (a)] The position of a permanent magnet with respect to an A.C. energized coil wound on a ferrous core which it maintains just short of saturation, and from which the magnet is isolated by a sealed container, is indicated by the change of inductance of the coil, due to the change of flux through the core, when in the neighbourhood of the magnet. A nuclear reactor shut-down rod, movable in a sealed sleeve of non-magnetic material, has an attached horse-shoe magnet which, in the fully inserted and fully withdrawn positions of the rod, presents its poles to one of a pair of horseshoe shaped iron cores outside the sleeve. Each core has a coil wound over a portion of reduced cross-section, which portion is driven into saturation, with consequent decrease in coil inductance, when the magnet moves into its proximity. The resulting increase in current may operate a relay or position-indicating meter.
