Abstract

857,059. Nuclear reactor control rods. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. May 28, 1959 [June 2, 1958 ; April 30, 1959]. No. 18170/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). In a nuclear reactor, the control rods are positioned electromagnetically. A permanent magnet armature is mounted on the rod and the assembly is displaceable within a stator winding. The latter is D.C. energised and produces a magnetic field which reacts upon the armature to move the assembly longitudinally. The stator is formed of a number of similar annular coils laid along the cylindrical stator frame to form a solenoid surrounding the armature and rod. The D.C. currents through the separate coils are each adjusted to different values to produce a sinusoidally distributed, axially directed field acting upon the armature. When the coil currents are adjusted together to a further set of values, the resultant field is displaced and the armature and control rod moved axially. The charge of coil excitation may be effected by a brush arrangement,
