Abstract
738,764. Dynamo - electric machines. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 6, 1954 [Oct. 6, 1952; March 26, 1953], Nos. 25045/52 and 8457/53. Class 35. An electromagnetic interaction pump comprises a closed iron circuit 1 carrying a primary winding 2 and a secondary winding 3, a second iron circuit 4 shunting that part of the main iron circuit carrying the secondary winding and spaced from it by an air-gap 5 in which is situated a liquid duct and across which flux is forced by the ampere-turns of the secondary coil current, this current traversing the liquid pumped. In its simplest form, Fig. 1a, the liquid in duct 6 is traversed by current from the secondary coil 3, sheets 8 of resistive material outside the flux zone being used to reduce leakage currents. Liquid flow may be reversed by means of an alternative primary winding on that part of the main core embraced by the shunt. In the developed form, Fig. 2, the liquid itself is contained in an annulus round the main core, the shunt being composed of arms 23 and the main core being built partly of a bar 20 with radial laminµ. The annulus is connected to four pipes 26, 27. A modification is described in which the air-gap tapers in an axial direction to reduce fringing flux. Eddy currents in the pipes 26, 27 may be prevented by surrounding them individually or collectively with packets of laminated iron. Specification 511,137, [Group II], is referred to.
