Abstract

889,950. Pumps operating by electromagnetic interaction with fluids. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 22, 1958 [June 19, 1957], No. 16442/58. Class 35. In an interaction pump the pumped liquid travels spirally in a disc-shaped chamber 11 across which flux 21 passes between poles 12, 13, while the current travels radially, the working flux being concentrated at the centre of the disc by means of a special winding 16<SP>1</SP>. The working current from a source 37 passes through series magnetizing coils 16, 16<SP>1</SP> consisting of wound sheet magnetic material so that they can also serve as a flux return path, the central winding 16<SP>1</SP> producing a central concentration of flux which serves to compensate the armature reaction. The current enters the liquid at the bare inner end of electrode 31, passes radially outwardly through the liquid and metallic spiral fin 41 to peripheral electrode 42. The pump may be used on A.C. and the coil and duct may be connected in parallel instead of series. For use on D.C. a permanent magnet field may be used. The chamber 11 may be of insulating or resistive material, e.g. stainless steel or nickel alloys, and the fin 41 may also be of stainless steel.
