Abstract
In an induction flow meter, particularly for use in the measurement of the flow rate of liquid sodium in a nuclear reactor, the coils 10, 11, Figs. 2, 3, producing a D. C. magnetic field are connected in series with the electrodes 12, 13 across which the induced voltage, indicative of flow rate is measured, so that they are supplied with current by the flow meter itself. The flow meter comprises an annular magnetic member 8, housed in an annular chamber 2, Fig. 1 (not shown), filled with an inert gas, which carries two pole pieces 9 round which the windings 10, 11 are wound. Electrodes 12, 13 are also supported from the pole pieces and are soldered to the inner wall of the chamber 2 by which they make electric contact with the liquid sodium. For starting purposes, the steel of at least the member 8 has a fairly high residual induction so that it retains sufficient flux at the end of one measurement to start the next. To prevent a back flow of sodium which might destroy the residual flux in the member 8, a non- return valve is provided in the pipeline 1.
