Abstract

In a process for the manufacture of permanent magnets having a large coercive force, ternary alloys consisting of Co 20-92%, Al 7.9-26% and a trace up to 65% Ni with or without impurities are heat treated in one of the following ways. 1) The alloy is chill-cast in a mould and then heated to above 350 DEG C. to precipitate fine ferromagnetic particles in a non magnetic matrix. 2) After chill-casting the alloy is solid solution treated prior to the heat treatment above 350 DEG C. 3) The alloy when cast, or after solid solution treatment, is cooled in a controlled manner to precipitate fine ferromagnetic particles in a non-magnetic matrix.
